During summer league, Warriors rookie forward Anthony Randolph was in a room full of NBA hopefuls listening to league representatives introduce them to their new careers. As an icebreaker, each player answered a question: what did they hope to achieve as a player?
Many players said they were just hoping to make it in the league. Others said they wanted to maximize their potential. Some longed to just make the roster. Randolph, his answer was unique and changed the tenor of the entire icebreaker.
“I want to be one of the best to ever play the game,” he said with the straightest face and the most matter-of-fact tone he could manage.
“I love the rookie,” said Warriors forward Al Harrington, who can often be seen working with Randolph after practice. “He’s got a lot of heart. He’s got attitude, which is great. “... He’s going to be a great player. He’s just got to stick to it. The thing I like about him is he’s got a chip on his shoulder.”
Randolph seems to know something everyone else doesn’t, though he tries his best to hide it. He’s going to be a star.
Randolph is quietly showing that his summer league success wasn’t a fluke. Now with the big boys, the rookie out of LSU is holding his own in training camp — and making many believe Golden State might have landed one of the best sleepers in the draft.
